Previously, I had expressed my opinion on the use of "electricity" to express the motion of Flash. Infantino had pioneered the use of streaks in his art which often left zig zags from the yellow trim on the suit. At some point this evolved into an energy that seems to some degree characteristically similar to lightning. Of course he has a lightning bolt for an insignia but I always thought it made no sense that Flash, whether traveling 100mph or lightspeed, would always leave a trail of electrons in his wake. (Though I did make a case for various forms of energy leaving his aura in my science of the Flash post - thisisgone.livejournal.com/55090.html)
At times the use of this electrical charge seemed too busy and even made Flash himself appear more of a static figure relative to his surroundings...
Speaking to the bigger picture of exactly how to create a sense of motion and power for Flash presents a unique challenge for each artist that takes on the character. In issue #3 of Flash: Rebirth I think we saw something new and I have to give major kudos to Ethan Van Sciver for it. When Barry Allen left Superman in his dust and began to enter the speedforce, we began to see the crude formation of fractals. While seemingly innocuous as a means for translating motion - I can't think of anything better that encapsulates the degree to which Flash wields power over systemic minutia and the universal infinite... fractals are science big and small and if the idea is further fleshed out - it would be a COMPLETELY different way of expressing Flash's motion and in a sense, his relationship to everything. The fractals could be large or small and detailed or roughly drawn depending on Flash's speed or action. I really hope EVS pushes this further.
