Overall liked it. Flashback was great, loved details like Sam Scudder's orange-and-green striped tie. The witness protection explanation was perfect: simple and elegant, and given Barry's career, completely believable to his former associates. Still not a fan of the tragic past, though, and the Secret Origin of the Bow Tie was unnecessary. Haven't had time to write up a full review yet (need to get home, re-read issue #1, and read this one again), but I've posted a few more thoughts on my blog.

I enjoyed the issue. Everything is still very set-upish so I'm looking forward to the action picking up in the next issue hopefully. Oh and the whole Black Flash thing was awesome at the end. Though Bart getting reduced to one panel(albeit a funny one) upset me. Though did anyone notice Wally got his ass handed to him by the Savitar follower.

This was an extremely quick read. I'm not too excited about the "witness protection" angle by Iris/Diana, but its probably the most sensible explanation for Barry's absence. Wally took an awful lot of blows to the head in this issue, lol. And she died for it! Art was damn good. Favoritism aside, the scenes with Wally and Barry were easily the best looking. True story: I seriously gasped when I saw Linda in there with her long hair. I'm going to pretend that its there because I've been begging for it forever. I also loved seeing Scudder in the courtroom. Seemed very Law & Order/C.S.I. -ish. The beginning dragged. It was somewhat boring. I actually wanted to skip some dialogue. The bad: 1. Henry Allen died in prison. 2. Iris West met Barry twist. 3. (Nitpick) The bowtie. It wasn't uncommon back then, so it should have been okay. 4. Fyre mentioning Barry hasn't aged, but not Iris. She should look a bit over don't ya think? 5. Tim Drake being in Titans Tower. Its a pet peeve. He's no longer a Titan, and hasn't been for a while now. I realize that the scripts for Rebirth were probably done a long time ago, but if he quit on his friends and family to save Gotham from burning down why would be in San Francisco? Bart is a speedster, he could have gone to see Tim much easier than vice versa. 6. The twist at the end. Doesn't seem all that interesting. I'm curious, but I'm just not excited. Did anyone pick up the Variant cover? I couldn't find that anywhere in the city.

Why did Barry's eyes go dark when Max was mentioned? Seems like he's going to be important later.
Also, I don't much like Iris's long hair. That bob cut was sort of iconic to the character, for me.

Iris' appearance just cracks me up. I'm a 33 year old woman, and she looks younger than I do. I don't expect comics characters to age normally, but let's not get ridiculous. Aaargh aargh aargh that Henry stuff.... Interesting to see Al Desmond working at the police department.

I know! I love Ethan's work but when flashback Iris and present Iris look exactly alike there's a problem. She doesn't have to look like Joan but she could at least look less model quality. She looks just as young as Linda did. lol I think its just so Barry doesn't come off as old, because apparently no one could like an older hero. Especially one with living parents.

If anyone's interested, I've reread both issues and spent waaay too long writing up a detailed review over at Speed Force. So ironic that "rebirth" is so focused on death...

I loved the Black Flash angle at the end because well...I've always wanted to see more Black Flash. Just a cool idea being Grim Reaper for speedsters. And yeah the Iris age bugged me a bit too as well. EVS says fans are going to absolutely love issue #3 so let's hope he's right.

This was a decent issue, but not a stellar one. All said and done, only two main events happened in the whole issue: Barry and Iris' flashback scenes and Barry becoming the Black Flash. Some of the material felt like padding though.
I don't like the change to Barry and Iris' relationship. The dialogue made it appear as if the only reason Iris knew of and wanted to know more of Barry was because of his mother's murder and she wanted an inside source to the police. That kills the charm and romance of their previous start of their relationship which I think is better.
Jay, Bart, and the kids only rate one panel each in this issue??
With Christina dead and what happened previously in the temple, I think it's safe to say that the Cult of Savitar is now officially dead.....gee, thanks Johns. Wasted potential and this from a writer known for taking sub-par characters and making them great (Not that Savitar was ever sub-par but still...) I also don't like this continuing supposition that Savitar 'escaped' his prison of the Speed Force when in fact the Speed Force was his heaven and he wanted to be there in the first place. That is, unless he found it to be wanting in some way and wanted to leave, but we the readers won't ever found out now since he's dust......*sigh*
My biggest nitpick is about this Witness Protection deal. Yes, it makes sense but no reason is given yet as to why Barry would 'need' it. Technically, he disappeared after his trial, so unless it's somehow tied in with that or this new material dealing with his mother's death, I find this odd. Plus, considering how Frye continued his boasting and praising of Barry as one of Central City's finest ever, I'm surprised the man would swallow this explanation up so quickly and quietly. I'm not entirely sure of what Barry's public status was during this time, but if the man was this impressed by him, surely he would have made some inquires during this time as to what happened to him.
So now Barry is Death. Cool, let's see what happens next. Actually, this kind of reminds me of how a new Black Racer was picked during Kirby's New God series.
I wouldn't call the title slow, but like EVS said, hopefully #3 will quickly pick up the pace.
