I'd be elated with a Flash movie regardless of which generation they used but Wally's predominant arc is still dependant on Barry. You'd still have derivative set up that wasn't central to the main character which would make for a rambling movie script... and to ignore it wouldn't really appreciate who and what Wally's has made of himself in context.

I think Neil Patrick Harris might make a better Pied Piper... wirey frame and stature. Ooh, good point! But I guarantee you people would complain that he was only hired to play Piper because he's gay. Lulz, Val Kilmer as Ringmaster -- classic

Not if you....*gasp*....tweak the origin a bit. Play the Kid Flash angle less. Kill Barry to start the movie with something extravagant. I've thought this through a zillion times. A Wally movie can work without completing killing the experience with Barry's origin and life as The Flash.

Not if you....*gasp*....tweak the origin a bit. Play the Kid Flash angle less. Kill Barry to start the movie with something extravagant. I've thought this through a zillion times. A Wally movie can work without completing killing the experience with Barry's origin and life as The Flash. Even if you tweak the moment of origin the defining character arc of Wally West is undoubtedly his quest to fulfill a legacy and meet his own potential on his own terms as a hero. His story is spectacular because he had real growth in a story that had a beginning, a middle, and an end. He began as a starstruck sidekick, went on to become a teen titan, and a spoiled self-righteous young man who eventually found himself facing the humbling socially conscious era in his life as written by Messner Loebs. His resolve renewed he discovered that he was his own biggest obstacle in realizing his potential... He carried the torch, met the challenges, and even realized some of the unfulfilled dreams never seen in Jay or Barry's run. You know all this - but the point is that Wally's direction and personality are inseperable from his nature as a legacy hero regardless of the impact of any other story arc. The brilliance of the cumulative storytelling makes it appear that this was the plan all along - though Broome and Infantino, or Mike Baron for that matter were only writing the character one storyline at a time... to this end Wally West is a pioneering moment in comic book storytelling with which only one other character has to potential of reaching. You can't successfully boil all of this down into an hour and a half in my opinion. And even if you did - legacy rests on the significance of the predecessor. Failing to achieve the range of his trials, the conflict of the hero's focus on living up to his predecessor consequently suggests that it was the predecessor that the movie should have been about... If you were to cover Wally - it would be much much better as a tv show. This would allow for episodic conflict in each show and the long term goal of the full character arc.

I think you can portray Barry in a "saint-like" manner to not only Wally but to people of Keystone(and Central) City and still allow for Wally to shine through. I would have some elements of Wally's youth there, of course. That's where we have to begin, but where Spider-Man was all about becoming a hero, The Flash would be about becoming your own hero amidst life, love, and loss.

Ever seen that Zorro movie with both Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas as old Zorro passing the torch to new Zorro?

I never saw the whole thing but if memory serves Anthony Hopkins character trains Banderas to take his place... I think there is a parallel with the classic Zorro story since he is spoiled/rich which allows for character growth.
The original story for Zorro (and I think the recent movie) cast a nobleman who was indifferent to the plight of the common man -a reluctant hero that decided to no longer avert his eyes, but rather champion victims of the corrupt authoritarian rule... Wally on the other hand always dreamed of being a hero having idolized Barry Allen from the start. Since Wally's story isn't about redemption or revenge for Barry the movie would have to emphasize his trials on the road to becoming a hero without Barry as a guiding light - but as an "impossible ideal." It just seems like a scenario that would be difficult to pull off without the context of all of the years of trials that Wally went through. Not impossible... just unlikely. A plot like that is ideal for a sports oriented movie where filling the shoes of the fallen hero is as easy as winning the big game. Even those typically come across a bit two dimensional.
Who knows? Script writers may craft a completely different character and just call him Wally West.

I know that won't be the case. I know Dan will do a good job on the script, and with Geoff the technical stuff that we care about will be there as well. I'm just worried about the casting.

I gotta put more thought into this but I gotta say, I was bummed when I heard Ryan Reynolds was cast as Hal. To me Ryan was the spitting image of an adult Wally!

The Flash/Barry Allen - Chris Pine I'm very much for NPH has Barry as well but to me, Pine has that extra appeal that would make people go see a Flash film. I personally would've preferred Pine being Hal but as Ryan Reynolds (many people's top choice for Flash when Wally looked the top character candidate) why not Pine for Barry Allen Iris West - Jessica Biel Strong, sexy, and more believable as Iris West than Kate Bosworth was as Lois (but won't go into THAT subject matter...) Jay Garrick - John Wesley Shipp It be a cool nod to fans of the tv show to cast John Wesley Shipp as Jay Garrick. Plus, Shipp actually kinda looks like Jay these days Professor Zoom/Eobard Thawne - Leonardo Dicaprio The dude's very much got the acting chops and I think could act as a perfect antagonist against Chris Pine Captain Cold - Jeremy Piven The guy can play cool roles, action roles, comedy roles, you name it. Hell, the guy pulled off playing Elongated Man on Justice League Unlimited. I think he could definitely pull off Captain Cold. Hal Jordan - Ryan Reynolds (This pic is entirely fan made for those who don't know) Not have direct contact with Barry at all but a brief cameo featuring the Lantern I think would go quite nicely like Robert Downey Jr.'s cameo at the end of Hulk. Besides, we all know we'd love to brag that the Brave and the Bold have appeared in a movie together first before Supes and Batman Detective Frye To me this guy will always bee the guy who was stinkpalmed in Mallrats but he's a good character actor and would serve well as Barry's boss

Nooooooo, Jeremy Piven must play the Top! He was born for the role! (Seriously, I'm a huge booster of this. I even used pictures of Piven as my avatars when I played the Top at an RPG. He is perfect.)

Nooooooo, Jeremy Piven must play the Top! He was born for the role! (Seriously, I'm a huge booster of this. I even used pictures of Piven as my avatars when I played the Top at an RPG. He is perfect.) I agree, he looks too much like Top to not play him. EDIT: Here's how I'd do a Flash movie... TITLE: The Flash CAST: Barry Allen, The Flash Neil Patrick Harris Barry is, and always will be, a geek in my eyes, no matter how much Geoff wants to move him away from that stigma. Neil has the acting chops to make Barry believable and would certainly pull in an audience. Iris West Christine Ricci Seriously, I cannot see anybody else in the role of Iris. She just looks perfect to portray her. Wally West, not yet Kid Flash Calum Worthy Need I say anything? Roscoe Dillon, The Top Jeremy Piven As I said before, he looks the part to me. He's the main villain and he's going to be liiiittle deranged. Not, like, Trickster level, but not all quite there. You'll see... THE OUTLINE: We open to the camera zooming about Keystone City, with an animated Jay facing off against his rogues. Barry does a voice over, leading the audience to believe that this is their main character. Zooming out, it is revealed to just be a comic strip that Barry's reading in a cab and he's late for his date with Iris. Iris and Barry talk and Iris brings up an interview with Bruce Wayne and a visit from her teenaged nephew coming up. Barry is called back to work for an emergency and has to leave. He arrives at the crime scene to find a man frozen alive. Over to the next week and Wally gets off the train at central. Barry and Wally hang out in the lab while Iris is at work and, during awkward conversation about the Flash, lightning strikes through the window and directly into Barry and Wally and splashing electrified chemicals onto them. Cue opening credits While the music plays, we see a sort of overview of the Flash legacy from Max to Barry to Irey and Jai as well as their rogues drawn by Carmine Infantino. Barry wakes up in the hospital, puts on his clothes, and walks out despite his doctor's complaints. He just really needs something to eat and hospital food sucks, so he goes to the nearest diner. The waitress trips and Barry's super speed kicks in. He rights what once went wrong and runs off. Next scene, The Top is developing his machines. Cold thanks him for the cold gun and we get a view of Top's, er, tops. Back to Barry, we see him on the highway, getting ready to run. swishpan to him collapsed on the side of the road. A car pulls over next to him and Iris comes out and is understandably bewildered at why he's out here. Barry babbles deliriously. Wally is in the back and hands Barry a comic. They continue their drive to Gotham for Iris's interview with Bruce Wayne. Cut to Barry walking down a Gotham street, dinner in hand and going back to the hotel where they are staying. Batman stops him, tells him that he knows about what he can do and that he needs to choose what to do with it. Robin (Jason Todd) makes some snide comments, including the "Goddamn Batman" line. They leave Barry with a comic book, a first edition Flash #1. Cut back to Central, Barry's running around Central fighting criminals including Trickster, Pied Piper, and Captain Boomerang, while wearing several different costumes. This leads up to his first encounter with The Top. I'll type up the rest later.
